With Prom 2006 around the corner, the hallways are buzzing with anticipation and people scrambling to secure dates. But what’s the inside scoop?
The event, scheduled for April 29, will have a Havana Nights theme, according to senior Vanessa Tejada.
"We’re going all out on decorations," Tejada said. "Last year it [Prom] was at City Hall and it was really elegant. This year, we’re trying to make it classy."
The decided venue, Dolce Hayes Mansion, is at 200 Edenvale Avenue in San Jose. The other proposals included the Cabana Hotel in Palo Alto and the Coconut Grove in Santa Cruz. The student council made the decision to hold the event at the Hayes Mansion in a finalizing vote last month.
"The place is pretty plain, but that will help make our theme pop out," Tejada said. "I’m really looking forward to what we can do with the place."
According to student activities director Joann Vaars, both a vegetarian and chicken plate will be served. The planning committee hasn’t made any final plans regarding decorations yet.
"The seniors and juniors [on the planning committee] probably won’t want to set up by hand," Tejada said. "We’ll most likely get the underclassmen to help out."
Like last year, tickets will cost $60 with an ASB card and $70 without one. Tickets sales will begin Monday March 27 and will end at noon on Friday, April 7, the last day before Spring Break.
Students are also required to arrange transportation through Paly. The two companies providing their services, Stanford Limousine and Cloud 9, are offering 16 options to choose from. Options range from $30 per person on the Charter Bus to $258 per person for an Escalade, Mercedes, Rolls Royce, or Hemi 300, all seating two to four people. For larger parties, Land Yachts and Mini Coaches will be open to rent. All of these services last for seven hours, 6 p.m. until 1 a.m., and reservations must be paid in full by March 24. Flyers are available outside the Student Activities Office (SAO).
Although many improvements over last year’s prom are in the making, the committee wants to retain the usual prom craze.
"We definitely want to have the same amount of spirit," Tejada said. "Last year we had a chocolate fountain, and we’re trying to make that happen again. It’s mainly about having fun."
