Boys and Girls Club to host annual Battle of the Bands

The Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula will host the second annual Battle of the Bands at 7 p.m. on March 27 in the Haymarket Theater.

According to Henry M. Gunn High School senior and BGCP volunteer Alex Matthys, the event will be an improvement of last year’s fundraiser.

“Last year’s [Battle of the Bands] went fairly well,” Matthys said. “It was the first time we put on a Battle of the Bands so we learned a lot and this year’s should be way better, more accessible, cheaper and more exciting.”

The event will raise funds to help expand BGCP’s art and music programs, according to Matthys.

The fundraiser will feature six Bay Area bands, each competing for the grand prize of a $100 gift card to Gelb Music Store. Bands featured in the event include Paper Islands and Koitus, which consist of several Palo Alto High School students.

“[It] should be interesting going up against [band] Paper Islands since our music styles are so drastically different,” Paly senior and Koitus member Gabe Galang said. “[To prepare] we hung around, tweaked our noise and practiced.”

According to the event’s Facebook page, the fundraiser will provide music, snacks, and a raffle of gift cards and BGCP apparel.

Tickets cost $5 at the door or $3 with an art supplies donation.
