Preview: Fall choir concert

The Palo Alto High School Choir program will perform its first concert of the year, the fall choir concert, at Grace Lutheran Church this Sunday.

The theme of the concert is “For the Love of Song” and will feature pieces by influential Romantic Era composers, including Brahms, Monteverdi, Schumann and Schubert.

The concert will start at 3 p.m. and will be directed by Choir teachers Michael Najar and Monica Covitt.

“It’s a very exciting concert,” Najar said. “It’s really music featuring the celebration of the human voice. We have one very difficult song by Brahms, called Zigeunerlieder, which is a combination of choral and solo songs and all of our soloists are fantastic.”

The concert will feature soloists such as seniors Emily Willick, Aaron Slipper, Sarah Ohlson, Megan Rohrer, Rahel Erki and juniors Grant Smith, Claire Chevalier and Colin Theil, according to members of the Paly Choir.

“This is the first time ever, apparently, that choir is to sing Lieder,” Slipper said. “And to that end we are singing Schumann and Brahms— two monumental Romantic Era composers. It is a very unique, absolutely beautiful selection of music.”

“We’ve all put in a lot of time into preparing for this concert,” Chevallier said. “For most of us, our last two weekends were dedicated to choir and some people had started preparing as far back as he end of this past summer”

Najar is confident that the Choir will perform well during this concert.

“We had a 12-hour retreat last weekend where we were here working on the music,” Najar said. “My expectations are that they are over the moon.”
