Madrigals and Spectrum Singers, Palo Alto High School’s two after school advanced vocal classes, released their lists of students earlier today, and are already leaping straight into rehearsals.

After two days of auditions, which took place last Tuesday and Wednesday, Michael Najar, Paly’s choir teacher, posted the audition results after school and rehearsals began this evening.

Najar, with the help of Monica Covitt, another teacher, runs these special eighth period classes.

The delay between auditions and casting was unusual, as those in the Paly choir loop will note.

Junior Sarah Ohlson, who sang as part of Madrigals last year, explains why.

“Usually, it [the list] is posted right after auditions but Mr. Najar and Ms. Covitt wanted to hear some people again before the place everyone,” she said.

For those who don’t know what on earth a madrigal is, fear not.

“Madrigals is [a choir] known for dressing up in traditional Tudor-era clothing and singling madrigals,” Ohlson explained.

And Spectrum?

“Spectrum is an all-girls choir that can be any size, sometimes upward 40 people,” Ohlson said.

The 2012-2013 season is sure to be a busy one for both Spectrum and Madrigals, as well as Paly’s main choir, with a calendar packed full of upcoming concerts and performances.

Ohlson is enthusiastic about the prospect of the concerts to come.

“I can’t wait for another year of advanced vocals,” she said.
