Club day preperations under way

After the Sep. 10 Paly club orientation, future club presidents are establishing their clubs as well as preparing for the Paly Club Day on September 26.

Club presidents needed to turn their forms into the Students Activities Office (SAO) by Sep. 19, with ten club members and a Teacher Advisor signed up. Clubs who have turned in their papers by September 19 will have a signup for Paly students on Club Day this year, which will be at lunch on Friday, Sep. 26.

There will be a modified schedule on Club Day with an hour-long lunch between 11:20 to 12:30 and 45 minute periods. Clubs will be allowed to sell snacks at their tables. Every club that signs up for Club Day will have a table laid out on the quad. Clubs will have to have signed up for Club Day by Friday, September 19 to participate, and they will have to notify Student Activities Director Joann Vaars if they are selling anything at their tables.

This year clubs do not need to worry about searching for financial aid because the Student Council is taking care of it. The Student Activities Office has also kept all financial accounts for clubs from last year.

According to senior Jeff Berquerist, it is illegal for student school-regulated clubs to collect money for outside organizations without discussing it with Vaars beforehand. The reasoning that Bergquist gave was that there was a fear of people exploiting students for money.

This rule has created some skepticism. "It defeats the whole purpose of having clubs to help the community," Bergquist said.

Paly students who want to start clubs but did not go to the Club orientation meeting cannot start a club under any circumstances, according to Vaars. Last year, students started clubs without attending Club Orientation day even though they were not allowed to, and Vaars does not want to make any exceptions this year in order to prevent a similar situation.

Clubs from last year that are continuing from last year include Special Friendship, the Key Club, Junior Statesmen of America, Gay-Straight Alliance, and Best Buddies. Special Friendship’s first meeting was Thursday, September 11, two weeks before Club Day. This was to plan the Special Friendship Barbeque and Club Day. The Feminist Club is also already planning a sleepover, though it is not yet scheduled.
