Comic Book Drawing 1

COMBKDRW1 Semester 9-12

No prerequisites are required. This class practices character techniques and prepares students for accelerated comic book drawing. Students will learn to create their own personalized characters after they have practiced well-known basic styles. Students will study famous comic book artists and be asked to do periodic research on their styles and accomplishments.

Social Etiquette for Boys and Girls

SOCETBOYS/GIRLS Year 9-12

This unique class focuses on the behavioral differences between members of the opposite sex and how to interact without being offensive. Students will study the inter-weavings of the male and female nature and do creative projects to express their thoughts and attitudes towards each other. Students will also be taught politeness and courtesy while in the presence of any human being.

Knitting/Handwork

KNIT/HNDWRK Semester 10-12

Through knitting scarves, hats, and socks, students will learn the many techniques of handwork. This enjoyable and relaxing elective will relieve stress and provide a creative outlet for those who wish to make truly useful items. Students will first learn different stitches and then start their own projects. Grades will be based on the quality and work of finished products.

Fashion Design

FASHN DEGN Year 11-12

One year of art is a prerequisite. Students in Fashion Design will learn to sketch creative, original clothing styles in a work book which is used throughout the year. The work books will be teacher and peer critiqued at the end of each quarter and students will be expected to explain their creations. At the end of the year, students will get to pick one of their drawings and make it come to life in a 3-D project that will be presented and modeled. Grades are based on effort and creativity.

Belly Dancing

BELLY DNC Year 9-11

A fun alternative to PE, Belly Dancing is a Middle Easter art form that is both graceful and challenging at times. This class is best for students who are exceptionally interested in dance and who enjoy performing, as there will be six performances during the school year. Costumes will be provided by Paly and outside practices will be required. This class can be credit for art or PE.

Street Racing

STRT RACE Semester 11-12

This course requires a signed note from parents due to the obvious dangers of racing cars. The students in this class will first learn the rules and safety measures of how to race safely and effectively. After a month of explanation and clarification, the students will drive their cars to a designated race track set up for the occasion every Wednesday, and practice what they have learned. The rest of class during the week will be spent reviewing and testing students on their knowledge of racing.

Astronomy

ASTROM Year 9-12

This fascinating course offers students the ability to recognize star patterns and analyze scientific findings. Once a month there will be night field trips to go star gazing and get a more hands-on learning experience. This class will not be based so much on the math aspect of astronomy, but more the mythical and historical aspects. Tests will be administered monthly to test the students’ knowledge of subjects discussed.

Ebonics Around the World

EBWRLD Semester 10-11

In this class, students will learn the every day lingo of teenagers in places all over the world. In addition, it will focus on the history and past Ebonics these places have experienced. Students will be expected to do weekly projects involving lessons learned the previous week. They will also be expected to know the lingo on pop-quizzes and test. This course can be count for credit in the language department.

Gardening

GARDN Semester 9-12

Students in this course will be planting flowers and greenery at different locations around Palo Alto, making the area more beautiful a week at a time. One day every week, there will be a field trip to a chosen spot and the rest of the week will be spent collecting plants and learning how to garden correctly. Applicable for credit in art or home —economics
