Close game ends well for Vikes

The Paly girls’ varsity basketball team defeated Saratoga, 45-34, Wednesday at Paly in a close league game.
Although they were playing against Saratoga, a strong team with not only an excellent offense, but also defense, seniors Sara Schulte and Jossy Tseng led their team to a victory with their aggressive skills and mental toughness. This game leaves the girls with a 3-0 league record.

Within seconds of the first period, small forward Schulte scored two points, and she continued to dominate. Tseng assisted Schulte, along with sophomore Bre Clay, senior Savannah Hayes and junior Dami Wusu. They ended the first quarter 8-11, with Schulte scoring six points and Clay scoring two.

The second quarter went much the same as the first; Schulte and Tseng continued to lead the team in quick movements and excellent lay-ups. Tseng scored four points, and Schulte scored six. Senior Nora Morrison also scored two points, before being pushed out of bounds. Although Paly continued to score, so did Saratoga, and the score remained very close, with Saratoga ahead 18-19.

In the third quarter, the girls kicked their play up a notch, and were able to finish ahead, 32-27. The quarter started with Tseng scoring two points. Clay was fouled, and made one of her free throws. Tseng continued to dominate scoring four more points, and Schulte also scored four more points. Tseng was fouled, and she also made one of her free throws. Senior Jackie Schiessler made two points to put Paly ahead at the end of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the girls stayed ahead. Tseng made four big free throw shots to lock the win.

Although the girls won, some of the players were not happy with their performance.

"We could have done much better," Tseng said. "We were not focused as a team, and we should have won by a lot more. We just didn’t have it."

Schulte, who overall had 16 points, six rebounds and four assists, said, "For some reason we weren’t communicating well, and we didn’t play as well as we should have. Luckily, we won, and we should be prepared for Friday’s game against Los Gatos."

The Vikes play Los Gatos on Friday at Paly at 6 p m. Los Gatos is currently 1-1 in league. Friday is a quad night, so all four teams will play; girls junior varsity, boys junior varsity, girls varsity, and boys varsity.
